Satudi Teej: A Festive Celebration with Sattu Food and Sweets
Introduction
Sattudi Teej, also known as Badi Teej or Kajari Teej is one of the most significant festivals celebrated by women who hail from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, some parts of Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. It falls on the third day (Tritiya Tithi) in the month of Bhadrapada, i.e. three days after Raksha Bandhan.
When is the Festival Celebrated?
Teej, a three-day-long Hindu festival, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It falls in the month of Shravana or Sawan that corresponds to the Indian monsoon season of July- August. The exact day on which it is celebrated is determined by the moon's cycle.
According to mythology, Teej is celebrated to mark the reunion of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva in the monsoon. On the day of Kajari Teej or Sattudi Teej, married women keep fast. In some regions, women celebrate the festival in their marital home while in some other places; they head to their maternal house for observing the vrat. However, the Vidhi, may vary in different regions. On the day of Kajari Teej, women make a pind (ball) of Sattu and worship it. The Sattu comes from the woman's maternal home. The pind must be made of Sattu, ghee, and sugar and must be shaped like a mountain. According to another tradition, the Puja Vidhi also includes worshipping Lord Ganesha.
Place an idol of Lord Ganesha on a wooden platform (Chaupayi or Pata) after spreading a layer of whole wheat on it. Then light an oil lamp, offer water followed by kumkum and flowers to Lord Ganesha. Afterward apply kumkum, mehendi, and kajal on all four sides of the platform. Then do the Naiveidhya (you may offer a sweet prepared at home).
Subsequently, for the Teej puja, you would need, kajal, mehendi, kumkum, roli, oil lamp, a neem tree twig with leaves, some natural clay or mud, lemon, cucumber, a kalash with water, a nath (nose ring), Naivedhya, Sattu pind and raw milk.
